Why do you need my social security number for license information?

This requirement is mandated by the federal "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996" and Section 30-3-194 of the Code of Alabama, 1975.

When must I renew my personal license?
Personal licenses must be renewed by the last day of your birth month in odd-numbered years. Applications for renewal received more than five days after that date will be assessed a late fee of $ 50.

When must I renew my salon business license?
Salon licenses must be renewed by September 30th in odd-numbered years. Applications for renewal received more than thirty-one days after that date (October 31st) will be assessed a late fee of $ 50.

If I get a new license in renewal year why do I have to renew again in my birth month?
By law no license is valid for more than two years. To provide for this problem your original license fee is only $ 15. New business licenses issued before September 1st in renewal years have been reduced to compensate for a short term license.

How do I renew my personal or salon license?
You may renew online. On our home page, just click on "Click here for Online Renewal" and follow instructions. For renewals not processed online, please click on "Applications" and print a copy of the renewal application. Fill it out according to instructions and send it to the Alabama Board of Cosmetology, PO Box 301750, Montgomery, AL 36130-1750. For the 2009-11 renewal cycle, a 2" x 2" passport-type photo (head and shoulders, full frontal view) is required. For the 2011-13 renewal cycle, a photo is not required.

Can I renew my license if I have not received a renewal notice?
Yes. For on-line renewal, on our home page, just click on "Click here for Online Renewal" the feature and follow instructions. For renewals not processed online, click on "applications" and print a copy of the proper form and fill it out according to instructions.

How do I renew a personal license which has been expired over three years?
Personal licenses which have been expired more than three years must be re-instated, which requires re-taking the practical exam. Once you have passed the practical exam you will owe back fees for the period of expiration and a penalty fee. You must contact the office to arrange for the exam.

What is a manager?
A manager license is required to actually run a salon or rent a booth. You must hold a active license for at least a year and pay an upgrade fee of $ 15 to be issued a manager license.

What is a master?
A master license is required to sponsor an apprentice. You must first be a manger and document completion of 8 hours of board approved continuing education before being licensed as a master; however, you may upgrade to manager and master at the same time by paying the appropriate fees of $ 15 for each upgrade, or a total of $ 30. Master licensees must complete 8 hours of board approved continuing education during each license cycle to maintain master status.

What is an instructor?
To become an instructor, you are required to attend a licensed cosmetology/manicure/esthetic school, and take and pass both sections of the instructor exam.  Instructor licensees may also sponsor apprentices or run a salon. Instructor licensees are required to complete 16 hours of board approved continuing education during each license cycle to maintain their license status.

If I am licensed in another state, how do I transfer that license to Alabama?
First, you must request that certification from your current state be sent to our office. This must be sent directly from your current state directly to our office. This should not be sent to you to be forwarded to our office, but should be sent to us by your state office only. Wait 2 (two) weeks after you request this before contacting our office. We can do nothing without this first. Once we receive this certification, we will send you the paperwork you must complete and notify you if you are required to take any exams. There is a minimum $100 fee for this service.

How do I transfer my license from Alabama to another state?
License Certification Request
You must make a written request for the board to send a letter of certification to the state to which you are moving. You may print out and complete the License Certification Request (above). You must include a copy of your current Alabama License, your Social Security card and current Driver’s License with your request. There is no fee for this service.

How do I transfer my license from another country to Alabama?
Please contact our office for the correct application. There is a minimum fee for this service and you will be notified of the amount and if you are required to take any exams.

How many hours must an apprentice complete?

Cosmetology and esthetics apprentices must complete 3,000 hours of training within a three-year period. Nail apprentices must complete 1,200 hours

How many hours must a student complete?
Cosmetology and esthetics students must complete 1,500 hours of training. Nail students must complete 750 hours of training.

How soon after completing school or apprenticeship do I have to take the examination?
Your master/instructor and you are jointly responsible for scheduling the proper exam within 90 days after completion of your training. Failure to comply with this rule may subject your master/instructor to a fine and/or other penalties.

How do I change my name on my personal license?
At the time you renew your license please furnish proof of name change by copy of documents such as marriage license, driver's license or certificate of divorce.

How do I change my address on my personal license?
You must inform the board promptly in writing of any address change. Your file will be amended so that you may be sure to receive correspondence from the board.

If my license is lost or stolen how do I get another one?

How do I open a new salon?
You may download a copy of the new salon application from this web site. Please follow all instructions. A new salon is required to be inspected before opening. The application must be in our office at least 60 days before the opening date.

How do I change the name, location, type or manager of a salon?
You may download a copy of the salon change application from this web site. Please follow all instructions.

How do I file a complaint?
You may submit a written and signed letter or download a copy of the complaint form from this web site and follow instructions.
